Large Vintage Boxer Paintings

This might seem like two large vintage boxer paintings but I still find these two men very intimidating. They are only pictures but I would not like to get in the ring with either of them. These two boxers fought in the ring when men were men. No boxing gloves. No protective equipment. It was bare knuckle boxing. I can’t imagine what that does to your hands. Let alone your face. Thankfully the great sport of boxing evolved and now requires well protective gloves. Let the games begin.

John L. Sullivan was an American boxer who is best known as the last heavyweight champion of bare knuckle boxing under the London Prize Ring. Also known as the ‘Boston Strong Boy’ he was also the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing for a decade between 1882 to 1892. Sullivan was the first superstar of boxing and one of the world’s highest paid athletes of his time. Well before corporate sponsors took over the stars of today’s sporting events. John Sullivan retired with a total of 47 wins and only one loss. That’s a record to be proud of and I’m proud to stand by these two men.
