If you have the orange trees we have the the reclaimed wood planter boxes to plant them in. Made from reclaimed wood, these planter boxes were inspired by those used in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles. The Palace was first built in the early 1600’s in a small wealthy suburb of Paris. But did you know that the gardens were actually constructed first before work on the palace had even begun. That tells you just how impressive these gardens were and still are today. We hope that our interpretation of these infamous planters will be just as noteworthy. In fact, the grand gardens of Europe were designed to not just shelter plants but to impress visitors as well.
Reclaimed Wood Planter Boxes
A vast majority of the trees in the garden are orange trees which do not do well in the winter. So during the winter months, more than one thousand orange trees are brought into the Versailles Orangerie using planter boxes. From May to October, the trees are brought back outside into the main garden. The main garden which is highlighted by high trees and straight lines was built by the famous architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart and is considered one of his greatest achievements. Some of the orange trees from Portugal, Spain and Italy are over two hundred years old so it’s no surprise they are so carefully tended to. Oranges were first introduced to Europe in the fifteenth century. At first they were an expensive food item which was enjoyed by only nobility and rich merchants. Medieval cookbooks depict exactly how many orange slices a visiting dignitary would be entitled to. By the sixteenth century, oranges had become more common and commercial to most Europeans. I’ve never grown an orange tree myself but if I had to I would use one of these reclaimed wood planter boxes. Available in four sizes, these planters can handle not only oranges but any flower of your choice. Use them outdoors but they also look great inside. We may not live in a Palace but these planters might make you feel like you do. I suddenly have an urge for a glass of orange juice.
